EPA’s Antimicrobial Data Requirements Training Videos (July 2016)

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released an article announcing that it is “releasing five training videos to provide guidance on its 40 CFR Part 158W data requirements for antimicrobial pesticides”. The videos cover the following topics:

1) An overview of 40 CFR Part 158W Data Requirements for Antimicrobial Pesticides final rule

2) Environmental Fate and Transport

3) Toxicology

4) Cooling Water Systems

5) Wood Preservatives

The objective of these videos is to improve the efficiency of pesticide registration by providing a better understanding of the process for those involved in the industry and the public.

On May 8, 2013, EPA published its
final revision of 40 CFR Part 158, the section of regulations authorizing data requirements that supports applying for registration of a pesticide product. The final rule, 40 CFR Part 158W, contains the data requirements specific to antimicrobial pesticides. The amendment, made as a result of expanding knowledge, was created to ensure the integrity of pesticide-related decisions by basing them on the most precise and reliable evidence.

On April 28, 2015, EPA released a
letter outlining the ways in which the Agency has been enforcing 158W in regards to both already registered antimicrobial pesticides and new registration applications.

Pesticide products must be approved by EPA before being sold or distributed. EPA grants a “registration” or license to market these products when they have passed all environmental, health and safety testing. According to
EPA, “anyone or any company that registers pesticides under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA)” must adhere to these data requirements.
